Interview with Montserrat Martinez

Interview with Montserrat Martinez

Could you please introduce yourself and tell us how you started in the arts? and your first experience in art making?

I’m Montserrat Martinez, a Mexican Artist, since I was a kid I was in love with different types of Art... but I started working full time 5 years ago. My first experience?... I think drawing manga with my eldest brother, Hugo.

How would you describe yourself and your artwork?

Well... Montserrat is a natural curious person, she’s always looking for inspiration and new adventures, always creating something in her mind... she can be an obsessive person when she discovers something new for her Art.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

From everything! Life itself.

Music... when I discover something new I can listen it for hours, I can’t paint without music, actually I can’t do anything without music... the last time at the studio I listened Depeche Mode the whole day, I have something special with that band that connects me... they are geniuses.

Traveling... visiting new places, coming back to places I adore, breathtaking landscapes, beautiful people, creative people, the beautiful and bizarre, if you look close there’s inspiration everywhere... I call it beauty in this world.

The Universe... I have a deep obsession with it since childhood, is like the main source.  Books, Films, (I wanted to be a filmmaker when kid) Dreams... sometimes they can be nightmares too. Luka and Lenin, I love watching them grow and write short stories about Lu, he’s my little dragon, my daily inspiration.

What emotions do you hope the viewers experience when looking at your art?

Joy and connection.

When do you know that an artwork is finished ?

When I can see harmony/balance in the artwork it’s done.

What has been the most exciting moment in your art career so far?

Well... a lot of moments... the first was in 2017 when I showed my first solo exhibition in a Mexican Museum for more than a month, the opening (7.7.17) was a strong day for me.. it was charged with tons of emotions, (ups & downs) it’s a long story but appreciate all my work together was beautiful.

How long does it take to produce one work?

it depends of the piece and mood, can be from 3 days (non stop) to months...

What exciting projects are you working on right now? Can you share some of the future plans for your artworks?

Last week I exhibited in Tokyo, now I’m currently working in a solo exhibition for Mexico City and Miami, I really loved Japan, I didn’t want to come back!

Do you have any upcoming events or exhibitions we should know about?

For this year Mexico and Miami and in 2019 a solo exhibition in NY and Tokyo.

Where do you see your art going in five years?

I don’t know... hopefully I’ll be illustrating a Depeche Mode’s and Gorillaz’s album cover... (working with the bands I love since my childhood) and exhibiting with Gagosian jejeje
