Artist Statement

Anmol Anubhai was born in India in 1994. She is a human-centred visual artist and design researcher who graduated with a Master of Human-Computer Interaction and Design at the University of Washington, Seattle USA. She received a bachelor's degree in Information and Communication Technology from Ahmedabad, India. Her multi-cultural experiences influence and inform her storytelling approaches. She currently works as a design researcher for the Amazon Web Services (AWS), AI/ML team.
She has a deep interest in people, is inspired by observing life, conversations, and society and then expressing it using her unique voice. Using mixed media methodology, she creates images that express her curiosity, observations, thoughts, interpretations, and perceptions. She has experimented with physical computing to make interactive art installations. Today for her artistic work, she uses different media and tools such as wood, acrylic paints, ink, photography, watercolours, and chalk. These works invite dialogue on society-centred topics. Her main passion and motivation as an artist is child well-being and using art to give back to society, she recently made an art piece for ‘Shwas’ (An India-based NGO focused on making education accessible for all).

What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?

I have always wanted to explore and discover mediums other than language to express and share my thoughts and experiences - I feel visual art is a more inclusive medium for communicating with people instead of language. I love using art as a tool to initiate dialog on the many experiences and reflections that we have as humans.

What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?

I see myself becoming a mixed media artist who works on society-centred topics.

What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

These are just some thoughts and experiences I have had in life - I welcome you to share your thoughts and begin a dialog! More than a monologue, I want this to be a dialogue. Let's talk.

Can you explain the process of creating your work?

I am immensely inspired by Josh MacPhee and his incredibly meaningful work. Whenever there is an experience or an observation that I want to make a mental note of, I begin by doodling on paper. Post that I try to pick mediums that might help me do justice to the idea. I am trying my best to move away from 'perfection' ! I want it to be authentic and organic instead.

What is your favourite part of the creative process?

My favourite part is observing people as they interpret the piece and make it their own. There is no one meaning to art and watching people bring their own experiences to the table, make the pieces relatable, and thereby make it their own, is a much-treasured experience according to me. That is how a single art piece continues to grow with time and as more lives touch it.

Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?

I want to focus on socially engaged art - you will hopefully see more interactive art pieces from me in the future wherein the viewer also engages with the piece and thereby shapes it in unique ways.
