Atsushi Imai

Biography

Imai Atsushi was born in 1973. I currently live in Himeji City. He returned as a painter in 2014 for the first time in 20 years. He has been participating in art fairs around the world since 2017. The illustrations he draws are drawn with the female pop stars turned into characters. I also draw collaborative illustrations with Japanese anime. I also draw colored pencil drawings and pencil drawings. The drawing of the colored pencils draws on the theme of female homosexuality and bewitching, and the pencil drawing draws mainly the landscape around the buildings. All the pictures he draws are conscious of “Japan”. Various things such as women's fashion, gestures, and makeup. And when drawing landscapes, I predict and draw places that are considered to be anime scenes, which are also the subculture that Japan represents. There are two books published in the UK in his 2019 publication, where his pictures are published. "100 ARTISTS OF THE FUTURE" published by Contemporary Art Curator Magazine and "WORLD OF ART" published by World of Art Magazine Contemporary art magazine ISSUE 8 VOLUME 2 2019 ".

Artist Statement

I am active as an artist, illustrator, and writer. The basic pillars of each are pencils and colored pencil drawings as an artist, characters as an illustrator, and light novels and poetry as a writer.

What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?

From the ages of 16 to 25, I focused on illustration and graphic design, and as a colored pencil painter, I didn't put much effort into it. Twenty years have passed since then, and it was the time when I drew an illustration in 2014 and handed it over to see if her age, physical strength, and whether the picture I drew would be accepted. After that, it was important to deepen the explanation and understanding to my wife, so I told it after the illustration became a CD jacket in the winter of 2014.

What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?

In the end ... I don't know anything yet. The answer to that question is that I want to know how everyone who sees my painting wants more than I do. My personal opinion may be satisfying if I draw a picture and see it together and talk about it. It's simple to have only pictures forever or to sell a lot of pictures.

What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

This is the opinion of the drawing side, but it is very difficult. It changes every day in history. Chemistry, work, everything. And although it is the most delicate, I draw pictures from motifs while feeling the diversity of "gender," "thinking," and "space." With pencils and colored pencils found in any country. I hope my paintings will help you understand that even if the color of the colored pencils is only red, you can draw plants, the sea, humans, and the cityscape created from your own fantasies.

Can you explain the process of creating your work?

It's as simple as a child, but you just draw on paper with a pencil or colored pencils. The draft is also a simple way to draw the frame where you want to place things with a pencil and combine the details while looking at the reference photos.

What is your favorite part of the creative process?

My favorite process is to decide on a theme. The theme is decided by the picture you draw in your head before you draw. In line with that image, we also gather collaborators for the necessary experiences, places, and figures. Continuing from the fourth answer, if the production process and production plan do not match in my case, I may stop halfway through.

Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?

I don't plan on my own. It's always the same. Right now, I'm enjoying the joy of drawing like I did when I was a kid before drawing with technology. However, it is not always the same, and I am thinking of making it possible to combine the techniques of using the software as an illustrator. It will be the current trend of NFT art. Perhaps the foundation is a skill that I already had 20 years ago, so I think that now I'm showing everyone what the theme to be combined is imaged with colored pencils or pencils and pasted on a panel.
