Carol Brown

Biography

Environment, nature all around me, beautiful moments, happening all around us. Capturing those moments as I see them and showing how they make me feel, how they made me stop and take notice. I observe and dream, romanticizing people and places and dealing with them in my idealized state. Self-discovery has taught me to make my idealized world real. And share what I see. With my work, I want to recreate that moment when the image became clear, that I would always remember it that way, that I captured the feeling. Originally from England, Award-winning New York artist Carol Brown has had exhibitions in New York, Miami, Paris, Florence, Tokyo, and Barcelona, Spain. With a history of Independent Film woven throughout her work, she uses the medium to tell stories. Whether on film or captured on canvas or acrylic, the work captures a moment in time. A single moment that contains and evokes such reverence for nature sparks a connection and feeling of oneness with the universe inside you.

What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?

In school I lived for my art and photography classes, the Art Studio was my absolute favorite place in the world. I was born in England, Birmingham, in the West Midlands and moved to New York City after school. I started out as a Make-Up Artist with faces as my canvas.  I loved it!  I was invited to do Hair & Make-Up on a friends Independent Film production.  Thus, my love affair with Independent Film began.  Soon I was creating the entire image, hair & make-up, costume, consulting on production design, an incredibly important experience that I applied to my own sets.  Therefore, my years of experience in independent film colored my approach to art, telling stories on film and canvas. I always knew inside that I was an artist, it’s all I ever was, but real-life circumstances, self-doubt, pain, love, loss, sickness, and heartbreak were all obstacles to overcome before I could believe it.

What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?

Ultimately, I see myself as an artist who works with many mediums, photography and film/video being my favorite forms of expression, of capture, but I appreciate and rely on digital applications such as Photoshop to paint and manipulate the image into what I see in my mind. My work evolves as my energies do, so it is exciting to be able to express that and capture those moments.

What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

I tend to romanticize people, places, moments, and faces and dealing with them in my idealized altered state.  Self-discovery has taught me to make my idealized world real, and share what I see. With my work, I want to recreate that moment when the image became clear, that I would always remember it that way, that I captured the feeling. This is what I want to communicate to the viewer through my work.

Can you explain the process of creating your work?

With my figurative work, I rely on the energy between my subjects and me, the dynamic that manifests and then captured by my camera.  I usually like to tell stories, a narrative linking a series of works together with a similar theme.   Often the theme is moody and contemplative, reflecting on memories of emotions past felt, people once known, where my emotional focus once dwelt. However, I also love to journey outwards and marvel at the awesome majesty of nature that provides me an unending source of inspiration and awe.

What is your favorite part of the creative process?

My favorite part of the creative process is being able to recreate and make real thoughts and ideas, watch them take form and then come to life, using all your resources, all your life experience to breathe life into the project.

Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?

I recently began exhibiting my work in outdoor public exhibitions in Tokyo, Barcelona, and New York City.  It is amazing!  I get such a buzz seeing my art out in the public arena, for all to see and enjoy. I look forward to showing my work again this way in the future. We have all got our heads tuned into our devices lured forward with ever enticing gadgets and toys, art offers food for the soul, a respite from the prescient pull of demand.  I hope my work is seen this way, felt this way. I have several group exhibitions currently running and upcoming with several galleries, all online because COVID-19 has changed the way life for all of us, thankfully art exhibitions translate very well online where the art can still be appreciated. I am currently working on developing projects for film and television, which is very exciting, and the way forward.
