Gregory Moni

Gregory Moni

Biography

All his life, Greg Moni has had both an inquisitive and creative spirit which has compelled him to explore various and numerous mediums to express his thoughts and emotions. Born and raised in San Luis Obispo, California, Greg earned a Bachelor of Arts with an emphasis in theatrical design and then expanded his creative skills and insights by studying graphic design and 3D animation. When his father passed away Greg came to a particular spiritual awareness which he began to express through mixed-media abstract art. Since then, he has felt a mission to elevate abstract art to become a more spiritual experience through his unique and exclusive application of color, flow, and dimension. Greg's ultimate desire is that, when people reflect upon his art, it will lift them up while inspiring them to slow down, take a breath, and be fully present in the moment. He hopes that, at that moment, they be transported into an extraordinary world that reminds us to live life fully and to love others unconditionally.
"For we all are spiritual in nature," Greg says, "and are made from the stars."

What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?

I have always been curious about various creative pursuits and what potential, if any, I might have at them. The world of fine art has always been of major interest, but I was slow to pursue this particular discipline seriously until more recently in my life. It was through taking private instruction from another seasoned and more experienced artist, that my full potential at abstract expression revealed itself and I began to explore this artistic medium professionally.

What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?

I see myself as a facilitator and my artwork as an instrument for others to recall where they originate from cosmically and to understand that life’s challenges will fade into time but that the universe itself is constant. That we all come from and return to the stars. In a sense, I want to become a healer who is able, through my paint and perspective, can reveal to others a healthier and happier perspective about ourselves and our humble but significant place in the scheme of this vast universe.

What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

It is my hope that, when people view and reflect upon my work, it will lift them up and inspire them to slow down, take a deep breath, allow their worries to fade, and be truly present in the moment. That at that moment, they will be transported into an extraordinary world that reminds us all to live life fully and love others unconditionally.

Can you explain the process of creating your work?

While I prefer not to comment on my actual creative process, I will share that, like most artists I suppose, my work begins with a specific inspiration; a visual, audio, or emotive reference that has unexpectedly crossed my path and which I suddenly feel inspired to seek visualization in my own unique abstract manner. It could be a flower, a song, or even a simple feeling or insight which strikes me as profound or relevant at the moment and so I am instantly compelled to go into my studio and attempt to capture it artistically.

What is your favorite part of the creative process?

When my beloved father passed away, I found peace and solace in expressing my feelings through my art. At that time, I wanted to create images that I envisioned my father might now seeing through the windows of paradise. During that period, I simply allowed abstract expression to reveal itself through me rather than from me which, of course, takes greatly more time and experience. This now has become my favorite part of the creative process; to channel my muses but to intentionally direct the message myself. In my mind, abstract expression is not random but deliberate yet unpredictable.

Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?

Presently, I am fascinated by the connection between our cosmic consciousness to the rest of the universe and whether our past, present, and future is in fact random or set. I am also interested in whether the future can be correctly predicted and, if so, what part of symbology in the art can be a tool in accurately revealing future events. To that end, I am studying ancient symbols in the cosmos over the ages in preparation to develop my own artistic version of the Oracle / Tarot Playing Cards, a worldwide spiritual divining tool that goes back to the late 14th century.
