Biography

My name is Ignacio Crespo from Bilbao in Spain. I am now based in Radcliffe On Trent, Nottinghamshire where I have lived since 1999.

What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?

I started getting interest about art at the age of seven years old when I was at home and three porcelain figures called my attention, fascinated by the contrast of colours and shapes so I decided to portrait them on canvas as soon as I could, really attracted by the idea of interpreting the figures in different way.

What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?

I do see myself as an experimental artist. Every single painting that I execute is a new adventure and always trying to do something different than the one before giving a new sense of aesthetics and taking special attention to the form and shape.

What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

I would like to give a sense of emotions and feeling from my artwork and through it to see the humanity and kindness of the figures that I paint together with the landscapes as well. I wish to move the viewer’s senses and I would like that my artwork is able to achieve it. Art should make us think.

Can you explain the process of creating your work?

I always start from scratch, without any particular idea or procedure to produce my artwork. Different shapes and forms keep coming to my head then I need to organize them. Because I am working from abstract shapes into figurative artwork I have to change the ideas and procedures along the way many times until find the right composition and expression. As I said I am looking to add different aesthetics in every painting.

What is your favorite part of the creative process?

For me there is a time in the process when I find out what it will be like the artwork when I finish and then I can’t stop painting when that happens. The rest of the process is thinking carefully about every step on the way. There are times on the painting process where I spend some time thinking about a specific area until an idea comes to me.

Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?

I looking at the figure to develop it and transform into a new dimension and give something completely new to the aesthetics which is what most interests me, I think that there is still a lot to say and develop about figurative artwork to create something new and very different, even so much and absolutely wonderful artwork has been done by others. I will always follow what I feel.
