Biography

Born in Hong Kong but now a Singapore citizen, Eu Oy Chun completed her higher education at the University of Singapore with a BSc. After dabbling in photography and Chinese brush painting for many years, in 2008, she went under the tutelage of an internationally renowned contemporary Artist Mr Ren Jianhui to hone her skills in Western Art. It was during this period of training that she discovered her favourite medium is oil on linen canvas, as it allowed her to create texture in combination with brilliance in colours that best captured the essence of her subjects. Her artworks have been published in two Singapore Coffee Table Books - “Footprints on An Island, Rediscovering Pulau Ubin” in 2016 and “Flying Sleeves” in 2018 both written by Dr Chua Ee Kiam. Thus far, her artworks have also been featured in overseas publications. She has participated in the Chianciano Art Museum Biennale 2018 where she received a Special Mention for Merit, London Art Biennale and XIIth Florence Biennale in 2019. Her artworks have also gained international recognition through the awards she received from overseas online art competitions.

Artist Statement

As a Realist Contemporary artist, I focus on landscapes, waterscapes and animals in their surroundings. The majority of my artistic creations are inspired by the sceneries and life I have observed, through visits to local places of interest and my travels overseas. The beauty of nature, whether in its natural habitat or man-made environment, has always aroused deep emotions in me. I hope by expressing them through oil on a linen canvas, which is now my favourite medium, I am able in some small way to evoke feelings of joy and touch the lives of my audience.

What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?

In 2008, after dabbling in photography and Chinese brush painting for some years, I wanted to further explore my interest in art using other mediums. I went under the tutelage of an internationally renowned contemporary artist to hone my basic skills in sketching. It was during this art practice that I developed an interest in oil painting and learnt to be more observant and aware of colours, shapes, contrasts and the complexity of composition. As my skills improved I eventually developed a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction which has motivated me to scale new heights.

What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?

A Visual Realist Contemporary Artist creating art from Nature, Landscapes, Seascapes and Animals in brilliant oil medium on canvas.

What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

I  hope by expressing my artworks through oil on canvas and sharing them with my viewers, I can perhaps bring some joy to their lives or touch their lives in some way however small that may be.

Can you explain the process of creating your work?

The process normally begins with an overseas holiday trip or local outing to places of interest. As an avid photographer, many natural scenes that appealed or touched my emotions were captured on my cameras. These deep emotions would inspire me to further personalise these feelings by expressing them on canvas and to paint from the heart.

What is your favourite part of the creative process?

The completion stage of the creation process. It generally provides me with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.

Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?

Because I am unable to travel due to the Covid-19 Pandemic,  my current projects are mainly scenes from my local (Singapore) parks and gardens. Fortunately, I have many beautiful memories of my past overseas trips stored on my computer from which hopefully many more paintings are waiting to be created.
