Patrícia Rachel Baptista
Biography
My paintings are truly sculpturing in the canvas made using techniques that make people that contemplate them feel that are about to initiate an interior journey of intense emotions.
When I was a child, I used to draw and paint comic book characters. Due to life events, I moved away from art, but not totally, I started to work with 3D modeling and animation, and I believe that this contributed to the type of painting I do today.
My paintings are dense and have a lot of textures, they are practically sculpturing and probably I allied my passion for the painting with my passion for the 3D modeling. The depth effect made us “enter” into the painting and go to the other universes.
Painting is an incredible experience that makes us discover new paths, feel the world in a different way, and make us realize the endless possibilities that exist for us to have a full life.
My artworks reflect my feelings because when I am painting always comes feelings of joy and fullness and with that, I know that I am doing what I was born to do and at the same time to transmit emotion to the people.
Artist Statement
There are lots of ways to express art, with music, painting, sculpture, dancing, theater, and etc. Nature itself is the most perfect art that exists. The sound of the birds singing, the sound of the sea, the wind blowing, we reproduce with the music; a variety of incredible colors, thousands of shades, light, shadows, we reproduce in the painting; the movement of the seawater, of the leaves of the trees, we reproduce with the dancing. All of these forms of art are interpretations of nature, we put our feeling and try to transmit our vision of beauty, strangeness, of the scary, ugly, supernatural, and mystery. Sometimes all together, in a mix of feelings, that seems we go through a whirlwind of emotions for, in the end, feel the peace.
What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?
When I felt I had to show my work to the world. I love my work and I want other people to see it and feel it because I have something very important to tell the world and I can do it through my work.
What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?
I am an artist with a lot of passion for my work and to me, that is what defines an artist. An artist is a sensitive person that uses art to send a message to other people. I am an artist that wants to make difference in a hard world but at the same time so wonderful, because depends on how we look at it we see and feel one or another.
What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?
I want the viewers to travel through my work. A trip to known and unknown places. My art has the power to transport the viewer to other universes, to other realities, where everything is possible. I want my art to make the viewers see beyond what their eyes can see. My art is about feeling that provides beauty, fear (sometimes), strangeness, hope, joy, etc., that is, an incredible journey into the inner of each person. I hope people can do this journey with me and discover how wonderful and mysterious the world is.
Can you explain the process of creating your work?
My work always begins with the texture and that is a very important part, because when the texture dries emerge unexpected cracks and I use these cracks to compose the painting. The ideas come up from different sources, I like to depict nature, outer space in an abstract way, and some inspiration I take from things that usually are not so cool as a hole on the pavement, a cracked and dirty wall. I use acrylic paint for the painting and I create the textures using different materials as acrylic putty, sand, marble powder, sawdust, coffee powder, bandage, ash, mud. I use few colors because I like to mix them. When I mix colors, I feel I create art within art because I can create my own colors. And in each work come up new ways to do the painting, different materials I can mix with the paint, and in the end, what I think it is amazing, sometimes emerge a work totally different than that one I planned. I work in layers, so the underneath layers make difference to the final work. And painting is also a process for me to know me because I have to dig deep into myself to extract the visions and the emotions I want to paint, so I think is that why sometimes the painting is different in the end.
What is your favourite part of the creative process?
There are two moments that I love. Mesmerizes me when I create a texture and it dries and this depends on the kind of material I used, the cracks appear, and when I paint it is a delight to see the results of the mix of colors. I basically use five colors in my works, the three primary colors (magenta, blue and yellow), black and white. I simply love mixing colours.
Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?
I have two projects I am already working on. I am developing a series called “Brasil”, where I will represent the natural beauties of Brazil. This idea came up when I was watching a tv show “The World Seen from Above” and I saw a stunning view of Rio Negro in Amazonas and I decided to paint it, putting, obviously, my abstract vision in it. I loved so much the result I decided to make paintings of the natural beauties all over the country. The other project is about outer space, the outer space is so big that I want to explore it and make beautiful works. I also will explore different materials, different ways to paint, and extract the better for me to always offer amazing artworks people that will acquire my work. And besides, to move to a bigger place (the place I am working is becoming too little), I want to work with children in need to draw and paint. Work with colours awakens creativity and will give them hope and joy.
