Artist Statement

I adore vibrant colour combinations and working with watercolour and ink. Creating artwork is a wonderfully indulgent, empowering and therapeutic process and I am grateful for the art sharing platforms enabling artists to share their artwork online.

What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?

Since childhood, I have dreamt of sitting in front of an easel. Following a mental health breakdown, I started to paint to support my recovery (art therapy). It has been incredibly fulfilling to prioritise my inner wants and desires.

What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?

I struggle to describe my artistic style but ‘intuitive’ seems to be the best fit.

What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

Sometimes my work has been inspired by philosophical literature and I enjoy the challenge of painting my interpretation and for the viewer to contemplate their own. Ultimately I hope to provoke an emotional response, even if it is simply for the viewer to enjoy viewing bright colour combinations or to spend some time looking for the finer details (hidden faces).

Can you explain the process of creating your work?

I rarely have a pre-conceived plan. However, I find my paintings are heavily linked to my thoughts at that time. If I’m reflecting on an humanitarian issue ideology, historical event or text then I research the topic while painting. The painting and my understanding evolve.

What is your favourite part of the creative process?

Re-working imagery until it feels right for me. I love painting onto wood canvases, the paint soaks into the wood and its patterns appear. I find faces in floorboards, walls, food preparation, coffee stains - throughout my painting process many characters come and go.... some stay.

Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?

I have started to work on larger canvases. I am self-taught and gaining confidence comes from more experience with working with different mediums. I would like to be skilled to create a large piece with minute details. I am soon participating in an art fair and exhibition, (my work has been shared via online platforms or galleries that exhibit pieces digitally up until now), I’m excited!
