Artist Statement

I begin my excursions with a line which defines space, dimension and creates the concept of my work. Space created or left out, positive and negative empowers the painting. The line, space and colours as fundamental elements fascinate me. Since the last few years, I have been exploring these elements and by the questions like whether line creates the form or vice versa, and can we control space? Can we convey through colours ? These queries became my obsession and subject for this series. These explorations have led my work to utmost simplicity, visual abstraction.
In my current series of works, the explorations of the last few years and fundamentals of line, space and colour have defined abstractions. My architectural background imparts a definite structure to my works, my paintings moving towards the third axis in depth. With structured geometric compositions and a restricted palette, my works become simplistic yet achieving remarkable eclecticism. With vivid bold patches of bright warm hues against the greys, the drama is enhanced with stark contrast. My lines traverse a parallel trajectory and build energy. My works go beyond the surface of the canvas and reach out to the emotions of the viewer.

What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?

My earliest memories are that of me as a 3-4 years old, dabbling in colors, finger marks of paints on whatever I could put my hands on. It was a very natural progression. Even as a child, Art was my life. Firstly I appeared for drawing and art examinations, then worked on my architectural portfolio, then became an architect. In the meanwhile, I tried my hand at everything – watercolors, inks, rendering, fabric painting, oils, acrylics, pastels, almost all the mediums. But since the last 15 years, its been oils and acrylics on canvas.

What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?

While some say that the purpose of an artist is to express the beauty of the world around them, others claim that real value of an art piece comes from its ability to express truth in a way that influences people for the better. I would like to be known as both. My Art should be something which influences and inspires people when they look at it. It should make them think and they should derive visual pleasure from it too. It may be my painting, public art, installation, sculpture, any artwork of mine.

What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

Lines, geometric shapes & bold colours have a major influence in my art. They are minimalistic, simplistic. It is like going back to basics. Colour without doubt is the fundamental element of painting. Lines and geometric shapes are the first elements of drawing. When our lifestyles, clothing, cuisine everything is about trimming the excess, what about Art ? With structured geometric compositions and restricted palette, my works become simplistic yet achieving remarkable eclecticism. My architectural background imparts a definite structure to my works.

Can you explain the process of creating your work?

I am an artist who thinks has developed her own style, composed her own artistic identity, and created my unique works of art. I enjoy experimenting with vibrant color palettes and geometrical compositions.

My all time favorite artists are Piet Modrian, S.H Raza, Le Corbusier, Mark Rothko and I study them a lot.

My process in creating artwork - is very simple – it starts through drawing. I do a lot of study, lot of reference work and gather a whole lot of source material. I start with a lot of pencil sketches. I sketch, sketch, sketch.Painting, for me, is an extremely creative process, and so I let the canvas tell me where to go, and the paint and the canvas and me create a piece of art that people will enjoy.

What is your favorite part of the creative process?

The most exciting part for me is understanding the relation of lines and colors, their application in any particular art form of mine. The right amount, the perfect proportions, the right chemistry between lines and colors bring about balance in the art. I give a lot of importance to colors and the spaces created because of lines and colors.

Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?

I have always loved painting, acrylics and oils on canvas. I can express my ideas and feelings through my paintings. But along with exclusive artworks going on in that medium, I have also ventured in sculptures and installations. Shortly one of my sculptures will be seen gracing as public art. Its been interesting working on it as according to me, public art adds enormous value to the cultural, aesthetic and economic vitality of a community.
