Yuki Kodaira

Biography

Yuki Kodaira is an illustrator and visual artist living in Japan.
She grew up surrounded by nature at the foot of Yatsugatake, one of the most famous and beautiful mountains in Japan. While studying music therapy at a music college, she became interested in the connection between art and the community. Later, she conducted research on the theme of community and art at Saitama University. In her university class, she created a package design for Japanese tea, which inspired her to become an illustrator. She graduated from Palette Club School, a school for illustrators in Tsukiji, Tokyo, and is now working as an artist. She draws inspiration for her work from her personal experiences in everyday life and the scenery around her. She has recently exhibited her works at international art fairs such as Taipei Illustration Fair (Taiwan,2019) and UNKNOWN ASIA (japan,2020).

Artist Statement

Yuki Kodaira's work is influenced by her personal experiences in everyday life and the natural surroundings of her childhood.
She focuses on the interesting phenomena and beautiful plants that change their appearance with each season in people's living spaces, even though there is nothing eye-catching like a tourist attraction. She believes that what we take for granted is not necessarily what we take for granted when we look at it from outside the society we belong to. Through her paintings, she tries to shed light on the sense of discomfort that exists in our daily lives.
The reason why she paints so many plants is because she is interested in coexistence with other living things. Humans are just one of the many organisms that live on the earth. It is said that the human body contains more bacteria cells than human cells, and the human creature itself can be said to be a community of multiple organisms. Through her artworks, she continues to think about how humans can live in the global environment.
