Bo Mi Jo

Bo Mi Jo born in South Korea is an artist and a brand designer based in New York. Art is her loving companion for life. Her passionate talent in art has been recognized with numerous awards in painting, calligraphy, music, and writing since she was a child.

She moved to New York City in 2008 to study advertising at School of Visual Arts and graduated with honors in 2011. When she was in school, she has received numbers of awards in major international advertising shows, including The ADC annual awards and Clio awards.

While she pursued her career as a brand designer after graduation, life in the fast-paced city swept herself along by everyday tasks. She found that her mind was floating all over the place and losing the mindful connection with the present moment.

She questioned what art should do in the busy city life and started the concept and practice of ‘the power of presence: Placid Lake’ in 2016. In 2018, she introduced her ‘Placid Lake’ series to the public. Her art was invited to AD Art Show at Sotheby in New York and ArtExpo New York 2018. Her art drew considerable attention from galleries and art professionals, and she is participating in more than eight exhibitions in next 12 months.

“Art is a placid lake in the busy city life,” says New York-based artist, Bo Mi Jo. “In this enthusiastic city getting more done in less time is the order of the day. It sweeps us along by the crowd of doings, thoughts, and feelings, and takes away the mindful connection with the present moment.”

Bo translates the fleeting moments of a fast-paced life into still spheres on a tranquil surface that create a peaceful and calm clarity, bringing a modern sensibility and elegance to the canvas. She says, “When we focus on the present moment and gather ourselves floating into one, the flow of a swift current disappears. There only remains objects in still -- objects of things, objects of beings, objects of thoughts, or objects of feelings. Once things, beings, thoughts, and feelings separated from us become objects, we can let ourselves mindfully observe the relationship between these objects and peacefully coexist in the same space with them.”
