Interview with Bo Mi Jo
Korean-born, New York-based artist, Bo Mi Jo believes in and practices the concept of ‘The Power of The Present,’ whereby she translates the fleeting moments of a fast-paced life into still spheres on a tranquil surface to create a peaceful and calm clarity.
Elegant and reductive, her minimalist acrylic on canvas oeuvre illustrates the status of ‘the mindful connection with the present moment,’ Bo Mi Jo states: “When we pause and focus on the present moment to gather ourselves floating into one, the overwhelmed flow of a swift current disappears. There only remain objects in still -- objects of things, objects of beings, objects of thoughts, or objects of feelings. Once things, beings, thoughts, and feelings separated from us become objects, we can let ourselves mindfully observe the relationship between these objects and peacefully coexist in the same space with them.”
Could you please introduce yourself and tell us how you started in the arts? and your first experience in art making?
I am a contemporary fine artist based in New York. I create peaceful silence to find ourself in clam clarity. I was born with an artistic spirit. Art is always with me. I have strong confidence in communicating my emotions and thoughts through art. The first drawing that I remember was a baby bear. My father showed me an easy and fun way to draw a baby bear. I followed him.
How would you describe yourself and your artwork?
I practice the concept of 'Power of the Present' with my artistic talents. It steers me toward a quiet mind.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Conversation with my inner voices. I pay full attention to each voice and, at the same time, keep a respectful distance to listen to them objectively.
Conversations get deepen when I walk with my thoughts. They become solid when I take a bath.
What emotions do you hope the viewers experience when looking at your art?
I hope the art guides the viewers to pause and breathe. Then they hear a peaceful vibration that the art is creating, listen to their inner voices and find silent enlightenment.
When do you know that an artwork is finished ?
Colors and composition create visual vibrations. When they align in a harmonized vibration, I hear a calm humming sound from the art.
What has been the most exciting moment in your art career so far?
Great galleries, curators and art lovers have been crossed my path. They help my art get more opportunities to be presented to the world.
My artwork was invited to an exhibition at Sotheby’s 2018 and Florence Biennial 2019.
How long does it take to produce one work?
Once an inspiration comes to me, it takes 2~4 weeks to manifest it on a canvas.
What exciting projects are you working on right now?
Working with white and quiet colors.
Do you have any upcoming events or exhibitions we should know about?
Florence Biennial 2019. See you in Italy!
