Fiona Rae
Counted among the Young British Artists., Fiona Rae has drawn inspiration from many divergent sources ranging from Willem de Kooning to cartoons. Her abstract paintings make bold use of juxtaposition, both formal and thematic. Rae combines contrasting painting styles on the same canvas and renders often kitschy images with formal techniques such as impasto, resulting in works that are at once fanciful and serious, enchanting and slightly menacing. A critique of contemporary society is implicit in her work and is exemplified by her 2011 painting Kick me to the future so I can be reloaded.
