Interview with Joanne Huxford

How would you describe yourself and your artwork?

My artwork is very colourful energetic and powerful it has a lot of feeling and emotion in it shamrocks are abstract mini or figurative and they all are somewhat bold and strong.

How do you go about beginning a new piece? Do you have an idea already in mind, or do you start working with materials or sketches to find the departure point?

Are usually will start with a sketch of someone a silhouette and then it progresses from there nothing really is definite until I get into the work and start with the colors the paint the inks the pencils the swirls circles whatever I decide to use and then it starts to take form as it starts to take form then I progress into working with that form into what I wanted to become and then usually at the end I will have the title within a second the work is done say for instance Barcelona.

When do you think your most prolific time of day or week is?

I must say my prolific time of day is in the wee hours of the night truly middle of the night is when I do my best work for some reason I don’t know why my creative juices seem to come on after midnight into the early morning hours that’s when I feel the most creative and I love the dark the quiet and I’m just in the art it’s my favorite time to work.

What is a barrier you as an artist overcame? Is there anything that enabled you to develop your work as an artist in your life?

I would say a barrier I overcame was digital I was reluctant to try digital I was using traditional paints inks pencils in all my artwork for about a year and then a friend of mine suggested I try digital I was reluctant I tried it it took me a while to understand it and get used to it and then I truly loved it as there’s so much you can do with digital formats. I would say possibly would helped me enable my work as an artist in my life one was pain I had some physical pain and I was homebound and I decided to start picking up a paintbrush so that’s one thing I started to work because I have joint pain and I had to fight that for a while. I would say as I began working with art I noticed that it truly is a way to vent out a lot of feeling whether it’s sorrow loss quiet anger sorrow grief loss  or whatever say it comes out in your art for whatever reason you know safer instance you feel life is unjust or people have wronged you sometimes if that hit your head I will go do a piece of art in and get that out with dark blues blacks lots of slices reds inks pencils to vent out in motion and it it’s really been very cathartic for me  it helps with life all right just helps you emote feelings on paper .

Did you have an idea of what you wanted to create right from the beginning?

No it’s a beginning I worked with a lot of things I love in life which is the beach water ocean sand animals flowers and those came very easily to me a lot of pastels watercolors acrylics and then as time went on I just decided my work needed a little more punch with a certain edge to it and I took it to a different level with geometric patterns more intensity to my work I would say as time progressed it felt more natural to me as I evolved in my art it came more from my soul.

What is the meaning or creative inspiration for your work? We’re curious what the narrative or story is to what you are producing?

I would say the meaning and creative inspiration for my work is a life rot with pain and loss and when I work I literally don’t think about the harsh realities of life I’m very much in my art and I’m in it for seven hours apiece or more and then when harsh realities of life hit him a widow alone I wasn’t given a child because my husband had cancer and I don’t know I can go I think what my art does for me is it helps abate some of the loneliness in aloneness but also the creative inspiration for my work I would say is hope hope and joy I try to have my work a mid hope and joy end certain profound aspects of life.  And the narrative or story as to what I am producing is usually in regard to life all the emotions of life sorrow loss love sadness joy and I that I believe comes out in my art naturally speaking just sort of flows out of me.

Besides your artworks, are there any other things in life that your voice as an artist may consider vital or valuable? What makes you joyful and creative, in other words?

For many years I was associated with Hole In The Wall for children up north and Connecticut children with cancer and I would send boxes of toys and puppets and colouring books just to help the children I love children my husband died of cancer after almost a 10-year battle we were young he was 35 when he died and that’s something I feel very strong about to help children with health issues to feel better in life and I’ve mentored a couple of children through the years and I love children are very important to me I wasn’t blessed to have them because my husband was very ill very young but I think children are the future and they bring joy to the world truly because their hope children bring hope to the world.

Are there any exhibitions or places where people can see these beautiful creations in person soon? Anything on the horizon?
