Artist Spotlight - Mishel Schwartz

Biography

Several years ago, Mishel Schwartz took a leap of faith and gave up the stability of a thriving graphic design career in order to devote herself full- time to the life of a working artist. And once the decision was made, there was no looking back.

The Stare - 2023

Mishel has always had a gift for uniting colour and design, and has shown an almost zen-like understanding of nature, which manifests both in her early career as a designer, as well as in the work she creates today. Unique and subtle in style, there is great depth in the complex yet organic forms that emerge on the canvas in her chosen medium of Alcohol ink.

Gold Barrette - 2024S

After participating in shows at home and abroad, it wasn’t long before people began to take note of her inimitable style. She soon amassed an almost cult-like following by her peers, local galleries and private collectors, gaining recognition while honing her craft in the privacy of her home studio.

Self - 2023

Her work continually reveals an innate gift for technique and an original perspective bursting with great depth and beauty. There is an underlying grace in her work, each piece telling a multi-faceted story that reflects nature’s wonders in reality and in abstraction.

Through The Mist - 2022

Today, Mishel is fully immersed in the artist’s life, dedicated to creating pieces for shows, private commissions, galleries, branding and for the sole joy of being able to create.
Most importantly, she continues to fearlessly pursue her dream with limitless tenacity and abandon.

Artist Statement

My art makes me feel connected to nature--- to explore its beauty and complexity. From flowers in bloom, to birth and death; the warmth of light, the mysteries of the dark, all of these elements informs my vision as an artist.

Bedtime Stories - 2024

I am guided by imagination, memory and intuition; I allow the ink guide the art. I look at each piece as a kind of visual diary; a way to document beauty, but also to create something lasting, something permanent. In a time where so much of the natural world is in peril, my art is a constant reminder of the magnificence all around me.

In My Dreams - 2024

Sometimes, the forms manifest more organically, they seem real, touchable. Other times they can take on an invisible, hidden quality, and yet are still reminiscent of the world around us. I am often fixated on the multi-dimensional aspects of light and shadow, blurring the line between what’s real and what’s imagined.

Reverie - 2020

Alcohol ink allows for great depth and detail in my work, its fluid properties are very malleable and work magic on the canvas. I observe, almost as a third person, as one shape evolves into something else entirely; I play with the layers of colour, carving into the dry ink to bring out an intricate web of detail. There are times when the end result surprises me, and I realize that I can find a delicate balance between control and freedom in my work… and in my life.

Tapestry - 2020

Looking back, I see how the various stages of my life have all culminated to this time of inner calm I now feel. There is a fulfillment within that comes from being able to tap into my emotions and express them through my art.
