Artist Spotlight - Tedo Rekhviashvili
Biography
When Tedo Rekhviashvili was born, his mother noticed something unusual—his palms were wide open, a rare sight for a newborn. “They laughed and said he’d be open-handed in life,” she recalls. Even now, as he sleeps, Tedo’s hands remain open—a small but telling sign of the unbounded curiosity and generosity that have defined his life and work.
Tedo’s early years are filled with anecdotes that reflect his character: building boats with engines, riding unsaddled horses, and even risking danger to pursue his boundless curiosity. These formative experiences instilled in him a fearless approach to life, a sense of adventure, and a drive to push boundaries—qualities that are at the heart of his artistic practice.
In Tedo’s art, the theatrical and the everyday intertwine. Calm, colorful, and cozy environments suddenly give way to the commotion of characters, histories, and deeply personal narratives. With a single touch, ordinary figures become dramatic players, embodying philosophical and social symbols that reflect the complexity of existence. His works juxtapose vibrant color palettes with cosmic black, creating visual tension between harmony and chaos, humor and reflection.
Drawing from his extensive experience in printmaking and graphic arts, Tedo blends linear techniques with painterly expression, crafting a unique visual language that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. His works explore life’s wild aspects: the spontaneity of existence, the absurdity of destiny, and the serendipity of human connections. They oscillate between dreamscapes and nightmares, celebrating the raw, unfiltered essence of reality.
As an artist, Tedo views life as “the time of reality,” a moment to embrace the world as it is—wild, unpredictable, and endlessly fascinating. His art reflects the same wide-open palms that defined his earliest moments—a spirit of openness, curiosity, and a relentless desire to connect with the world around him. In the theater of life, Tedo’s works remind us that we are all players, shaping and being shaped by the beauty and chaos of existence.
