Katerina Stavridis

Biography

I was born and raised in Athens, Greece. My family was always fairly controversial, with a deep love for Art in spite of their background in commerce. Collecting art was a family tradition and one of my first endeavours with the wonderland-ish charm of colours. From a very young age, I was intrigued by art, and so at the age of 14, I took up my first painting lessons next to the renowned artist and incredible woman Loui Passalari.
Throughout my life, I've travelled, lived and worked in countries inside and outside Europe. For the past years, I've participated in many international exhibitions, both in Greece and abroad.

Artist Statement

As an artist, I’m defined by my love for colours, constant movement, and the elegance of shapes. I mainly express through the international movements of modern and contemporary art.
However, several of my abstract paintings have a common axis of impulsivity given through the tension of alternating colours. What bewitches me is the concept of hidden sensations and messages beneath pictures. My inspiration mostly comes from nature, the observations of daily life, emotions, and lived experiences. Art, for me, is a common language amongst different civilizations. Art is life and life is Art!

What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?

Becoming an artist wasn't the result of intentional thinking, nor was it a decision. Painting and Art have been huge parts of my life and ways of expression since I was a little kid. I took up my first painting lessons at the age of 14.

What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?

The art movements via which I mostly express are the ones of modern and contemporary art. However, I do not limit and categorize my artworks, nor myself as an artist, within the boundaries of specific movements. I prefer to experiment and the ultimate challenge for me is to create a personal identity through a combination of well-known and personal techniques.

What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

Through my artworks, I hope I can communicate the beauty of colours, the playful nature of shapes and emotions, the reflection and pursuit of (moral, social, personal) clarity, in a common language that moves mind and soul alike; the language of Art. I sometimes like to express myself by creating artworks that hide the boldness and intensity of emotions behind mild hues. I'd like to think that I lay a path of communication and ask the spectator to a conversation with the subject being: "The world through our emotional eyes."

Can you explain the process of creating your work?

My creative process today is already a step behind the one of tomorrow. Nonetheless, several times those two meet and create something more complex and new or even minimalistic and absentmindedly semiotic.

What is your favourite part of the creative process?

My favourite part of the creative process must be the moment when the original idea begins to clearly manifest itself and the artwork approaches its completion. That's when the final and most critical touches are made. At that point, I work restlessly until I see the final result.

Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?

My biggest plan is the inner search of myself through hard work and lifelong learning. If everything goes as planned, I can't wait to travel for some great international opportunities that I've been given. My inspiration doesn't stop for it's deeply rooted in many lived experiences, especially in an era of constant changes. But let's leave something for a surprise...!
