Dominie Chan

Biography

Dominie is inspired by her emotional responses to Nature. She is passionate about eco-art, land art and eco-aesthetics and produces ephemeral, site-specific installations and paintings. And as an eco-artist, she is aware of the impact artists have on society and the environment. Her goal is to use art as a way to raise awareness about the urgency of the conservation of Nature and to contribute to the building of a brighter environmental future for Hong Kong and the world.

Dominies’ obsession with the ocean was born out of her childhood experiences while exploring and playing along the Hong Kong coastline, seeing what hides beneath the writhing sea, wandering over the sand dunes and wondering how nature can thrive amongst our urban spaces. For as long as she can remember, her mother would take her out on all sorts of adventures with Nature; going to the beaches to nurture a fascination with the peaceful waves, touching and feeling gigantic trees and petite flowers... Because of this, her special bond with nature was created.

Aside from Visual arts, Dominie also has a deep interest in Jewellery Design, having studied Jewellery and Image product design. But even in jewellery design, she sees the ocean as her muse. In her designs and material choices, she pushes the boundaries of minimalism. By focusing on textures and surfaces, Dominie combines soft and hard materials to show the gentle softness but also the powerful and strong side of the oceans. From the hammered metals to the mixing of metals with hemp and silk fabrics, where the shimmering sunlight glimmers everywhere on the jewellery just like sunlight reflecting off of the ocean waves. Her collection had been selected for show at the 1881 Heritage, Hong Kong.

By the time she arrived at university, all those memories rushed back and her intrinsic artistic impetus was to create art by approaching nature again, by looking at Nature in an artistic-aesthetic manner. She feels that through art, we can cultivate our affections for Nature and communicate the value of being close to nature, through art, we can help protect our environment by reversing our growing disconnection from nature.

Because of this sensitivity and care, she has begun her journey, to document and to use the power of art to raise awareness in society to take action to protect our rapidly disappearing natural environments and to inspire them to make meaningful changes in the way they live. Dominie opened her heart to Nature’s call and she responded with her art. She used only what was found in Nature her moods and manners became her muse. And She left only footprints that would wash away with the waves or blow away with the wind. So until the next time we speak, these are the stories we shared.
