How would you describe yourself and your artwork?

I am a very sensitive person, passionate in everything I do, and bold. My artwork is emotional, the audience often cries or laughs during my performances, it is striking and blunt.

How do you go about beginning a new piece? Do you have an idea already in mind, or do you start working with materials or sketches to find the departure point?

I start with a personal emotion or situation I want to overcome. Sometimes I see an image of what could represent the emotion and it becomes a starting point to develop the core of the performance. I investigate about the origin of the key words or situations to gather up material that can help me in the creative process. Writing is part of my process.

When do you think your most prolific time of day or week is?

Any moment. I can be driving my car listening to music and have an idea crystallize. I sometimes go for a walk with my son and start to talk with him about the performance I am creating, and it helps to put my ideas in order. I might have a conversation with a stranger and suddenly an idea pops up.

Performance: OUT OF SIGHT Photographer: Jorge Cárdenas

What is a barrier you as an artist overcame? Is there anything that enabled you to develop your work as an artist in your life?

I battled a lot with self-judgement. My artistic training started at an early age as a classical dancer. The seek for perfection was profoundly installed in my way of being, dissatisfaction was always waiting for me on the other side of the door. I jumped from classical dance to contemporary dance searching to exploit my interpretative skills. Afterwards I travelled and lived in Spain for a few years where meditation and improvisation walked into my life. The combination of both helped. I was able to liberate myself from judgement and a new perspective took place, where process became the key of my art. I gained freedom and recovered my own voice.

Did you have an idea of what you wanted to create right from the beginning?

Yes, and no… I have an idea of what I want to say right from the beginning, how I am going to say it is what comes later during the process of inquiring and introspection. Often I create a video-art as a prologue of my performance. It helps to put my ideas in order and clinch the script for the performance.

What is the meaning or creative inspiration for your work? We’re curious what the narrative or story is to what you are producing?

In a way it could be resumed as the story of my life, just a random human being experiencing life. I take advantage of my experiences to connect with others and carry them into uncomfortable places where they can question their own life experiences, the senseless suffering, and sunder social standards.

Besides your artworks, are there any other things in life that your voice as an artist may consider vital or valuable? What makes you joyful and creative, in other words?

I have been inquiring in ecologic themes. It is a matter that should concern us all. I have an 11-year-old son whose concern about the world we live in and what we are doing to it affects me as well. One of my latest video performance “RODACACA” is an approach to littering and overconsuming. Our world is turning into a trash hold. I usually work with recycled material. “The Tapabocas Project” is a new artwork I am creating from face masks I have collected from street trash.
