Jo Beth Wharton

Biography

My name is Jo Beth Wharton, and i am a Sacramento based artist, who creates large scale collages focusing on strong women and female historical figures. Originally a painter, I feel that working with paper as a medium has allowed me to be more creative and expressive with my art.
I graduated from Arkansas State University in 2007 with a BFA in Art History, and attended graduate school at Chico State University. Studying the history of art has had an immense influence on what I create. It has allowed me to understand the different lenses in which art can be viewed and introduced me to the symbolism that the female form can hold.

Artist Statement

I have always been obsessed with magazines and the beautiful women that grace their pages. With my art, I am able to upcycle the paper within fashion periodicals to create unique portraits of strong females. Women, much like magazines, are often discarded once they've served their purpose. It is my intention to illustrate, through my collage work, that women are indestructible, and paper is not a throw away material, but a medium that has the ability to express longstanding ideals.
