Artist Statement
Observing the natural world has become a philosophical lens. As I learn more about plants and the human perspective, I question assumptions about the social norms of desirability of species and varieties.
In my Botanicals and Pond Paintings, I explore rhythms in nature, color and imagination. Beyond that they are a pursuit of pushing my painting. The first 3 years I attempted to paint lotus, all of the pieces ended up underwater in the muck which nourishes the plant and makes a habitat for koi and insects. When my pieces did surface the water remained important.
In my Equine paintings, I continue to investigate the Domestic-Wild relationship. On one level the art works are artifacts of a process between artist, the materials and the natural chemicals laws of nature.
The work is looking at how we are essentially wild and live with in social and societal structures. The horse became a metaphor for the wild beauty, the ownership of them and how we’ve harnessed the strength of the horse for war and for agricultural advancement. On yet another level, I have juxtaposed a range of styles to make an art history jam; experimenting with nods of equine historical representation.
