Noah Levin
Biography
I earned a B.A. in English from Stanford University and an M.A. in Painting from San Francisco State University. I taught painting at Santa Rosa Junior College for a year, then moved to New York where I sold my work to special collections. From 1986 to 1998 I earned a living in New York designing luxury textiles. In the summer of 1998 I returned to San Francisco and painting full time.
Artist Statement
Before leaving my native San Francisco for New York in 1982, I was painting large images of bare walls suffused in light and shadow. Twenty years later, back in San Francisco, I discovered a school of koi fish in the Japanese Tea Garden that led to a series of paintings about movement and light in dark places. Since 2003 I have been painting the varying blue waters of swimming pools. In 2006 I developed fibromyalgia and was unable to paint for several years. Working on a smaller scale than before, I painted my first Stow Lake landscape in 2014, but have continued to work on pools that are a hybrid of realism and abstraction.
